On 25 June 2025, the University of Amsterdam announced that Professor Maarten de Rijke of the Informatics Institute (IvI) has been awarded a prestigious ERC Advanced Grant. The funding supports his research on interactive search technologies. The project will take place at IvI, located at Amsterdam Science Park, and aims to make AI systems more responsive to user intentions.
De Rijke’s research focuses on how AI systems learn from user interactions to continuously improve search results. Rather than analyzing static user behaviour, his project models dynamic interactions—shifting from passive observation to active engagement. This opens the door to more transparent, fair, and user-aligned algorithms that evolve through real-time feedback.
The results of this project have broad applications, from smart search engines and personalised recommendation systems to AI tools in healthcare and legal services. Companies working in user interface design, information systems, or human-centric AI can gain significant advantages. Think of sector-specific uses in e-commerce, knowledge management, medical diagnostics, and legal support—anywhere adaptive, user-driven AI is key.
