LAB42 wins prestigious European award for sustainable steel architecture

Amsterdam Science Park is proud to celebrate the international recognition of LAB42, the new flagship building for AI and digital innovation. LAB42 has been awarded the 2025 European Steel Design Award by the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS). The award honours the building’s innovative and sustainable design, where steel plays a central role in enabling circular construction and future-proof architecture.

Designed by Benthem Crouwel Architects in collaboration with ABT and Van Rossum, LAB42 is home to research groups, startups and SMEs working on cutting-edge AI and data science applications. It serves as a physical catalyst for co-creation and collaboration between education, research, and business — a synergy that Amsterdam Science Park actively fosters.

Circular and modular construction for a sustainable future

LAB42’s design focuses on maximum reusability: the building is fully demountable and constructed from standard steel components. This allows for flexible reconfiguration in response to future needs — a key aspect of the Park’s sustainable and circular ambitions.

A magnet for international talent and innovation

LAB42 is more than an architectural statement. It is the new international hub for AI, where students, researchers, and entrepreneurs come together to develop solutions for major societal challenges. It strengthens Amsterdam Science Park’s position as a hotspot for deep tech and digital innovation and enhances the international visibility of its ecosystem.
