During a festive ceremony at NEMO Science Museum, the winners of the 2025 Amsterdam Science & Innovation Awards were announced. In the Environment & Climate category, the prestigious award went to BOR-LYTE, an innovation by researchers from the University of Amsterdam, based at Amsterdam Science Park.
BOR-LYTE is developing environmentally friendly borate electrolytes for sodium-ion batteries. These electrolytes are derived from the natural mineral borate and industrial waste streams, offering a sustainable and safe alternative to conventional lithium-based systems. The goal is to enable affordable and reliable energy storage for renewable energy sources.
The team behind BOR-LYTE consists of Florenz Buß, Valentin Geiger, Bas de Jong, and Chris Slootweg. They will receive a €10,000 prize to further develop and commercialize their technology.
The Amsterdam Science & Innovation Awards are an initiative of Innovation Exchange Amsterdam (IXA). The annual award celebrates innovative ideas from researchers within Amsterdam’s knowledge ecosystem. A panel of expert judges evaluated the nine finalists based on originality, societal impact, and commercial potential.
This award highlights Amsterdam Science Park’s role as a hub for sustainable innovation and the valorisation of scientific knowledge. The success of BOR-LYTE aligns with the park’s strategic focus on Sustainability, fostering collaboration between businesses and researchers to create a more sustainable world.
