Aurora AI model predicts extreme weather with greater accuracy

Researchers from the University of Amsterdam at Amsterdam Science Park and Microsoft Research, introduced a new AI model named Aurora. Developed in Amsterdam and Cambridge, Aurora predicts air quality, ocean waves, and extreme weather more accurately and efficiently than traditional methods. Trained on over a million hours of data, it requires significantly less computing power, making it globally accessible. This innovation enables governments and businesses to better prepare for the impacts of climate change.

Aurora leverages advanced machine learning to improve weather prediction. The model significantly outperforms traditional simulations in accuracy:

  • air quality: 74% more accurate
  • ocean waves: 86% more accurate
  • tropical storms: 100% better than seven leading international weather services
  • local extreme weather events: 92% more precise

Aurora’s efficiency means that high-quality forecasts no longer depend on expensive supercomputing infrastructure, making cutting-edge meteorology available in under-resourced regions.
