AI and physics tackle turbulence

The Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has received a prestigious NWO grant to combine artificial intelligence with physical models to unravel the complex dynamics of turbulence. This groundbreaking research, in collaboration with international partners, takes place at Amsterdam Science Park and aims to advance our fundamental understanding of turbulent flows.

Merging physics and AI

Turbulence remains one of the last great mysteries in physics. Now, with funding from the Dutch Research Council (NWO), CWI is teaming up with global institutions to decode it using a blend of AI and physical modeling. Led by physicist Daniel Rivas, the project applies advanced deep learning algorithms to enhance classical theories. This interdisciplinary approach paves the way for more accurate predictions and modeling of chaotic flow patterns.

Applications: from aviation to climate modeling

The impact of this research is far-reaching. Improved turbulence models can reduce drag in aircraft, cut energy use in industrial processes, and enhance weather and climate simulations. Even in healthcare, such as understanding blood flow dynamics, these insights offer new possibilities. By fusing AI with physics, industries gain access to precision tools and faster, smarter simulations.
