The UvA has now entered into a contract with a construction consortium to build LAB42 at Amsterdam Science Park. As such, it is anticipated that the first pile will be driven into the ground in August 2020 and that the building will be ready on time for academic year 2022-2023. Once LAB42 is complete, Amsterdam Science Park will have gained an innovative, sustainable and energy-neutral building. Designed by Benthem Crouwel Architects, LAB42 will become the ultimate place for education, research and enterprise in respect of digital innovation and artificial intelligence.
LAB42 will become the international hub for the development of talent in the field of digital innovation and artificial intelligence (AI). This unique building has been designed to promote interaction and collaboration and will house education and research facilities. Companies with an interest in informatics and AI will be able to lease space in the building too. Catering facilities will be available in the atrium, teaching and lecture rooms will be located on the first and second floors, while meeting rooms, offices for SMEs and lounge areas for people to meet will be created on the third floor. The top floors of the building will be reserved for the offices of the Informatics Institute (Instituut voor Informatica (IvI)) and the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) of the Faculty of Science (FNWI). These floors will also accommodate the AI labs of the Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence (ICAI), which focuses on the development of AI technology with business and industry, government and knowledge institutions in so-called industry labs.
LAB42 has been designed by a team made up of representatives from Benthem Crouwel Architects, construction consultancy firm Strackee, installation advisor Deerns and building physics advisor DGMR. The design is sustainable and circular. Amongst other things, LAB42 will have a sedum roof, solar collectors, a rainwater capture system that will be used to flush the building’s toilets and a smart cooling system for the server rooms. Another special feature is the possibility to adjust the temperature for each room individually. The frame of the building will be formed by a steel skeleton that is fully demountable. The same principle will apply to the floor sections and the partition walls. Reusable modular components will be chosen wherever possible.
The construction consortium consists of Visser Smit Bouw BV and Kropman Installatietechniek BV. Studio Groen + Schild will be responsible for interior design aspects of the project. Construction will start in autumn 2020 and the building is scheduled to be ready on time for academic year 2022-2023. Visuals of the design are available upon request and can be published on the proviso that the source is specified.
