Instant 3D insights from raw microscopy data

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has partnered with Amsterdam Science Park-based deep-tech startup Raynetics to advance AI-powered 3D image reconstruction at the atomic to microscopic scale. This collaboration strengthens scientific innovation in imaging through knowledge exchange and strategic investment.

CWI’s Computational Imaging group, led by Tristan van Leeuwen, develops cutting-edge mathematical algorithms for image reconstruction. Raynetics – co-founded by former CWI researcher Ajinkya Kadu – builds AI-based software that converts raw microscopy data (STEM, FIB-SEM, EDXS) into highly accurate 3D models. As part of the partnership, Van Leeuwen joins Raynetics’ advisory board, and CWI acquires a minority share in the company. The fusion of advanced mathematical research with pragmatic AI engineering accelerates a major breakthrough in computational imaging.

Applications across science and industry

This technology allows the visualization of complex microscopic structures, with potential impact in semiconductor industries—enabling defect detection and faster design cycles—and materials science, where internal composition can be linked to mechanical, thermal, or electrical properties. Additional applications include 3D printing, energy storage, and aerospace, where precise validation is crucial. Raynetics is also developing a cloud platform, allowing users worldwide to upload datasets and access powerful 3D visualization and analysis tools—without requiring in-house computational resources or image processing expertise.
