Researchers from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) at Amsterdam Science Park joined forces with the City of Amsterdam to explore biodiversity in the city’s canals. The research takes place within the city limits and aims to better understand and strengthen aquatic urban nature.
By combining advanced DNA technology with ecological monitoring, scientists can now identify microorganisms and larger species in the canals faster and more comprehensively than traditional methods allow. The collaboration with the municipality also grants access to long-term environmental data and unique urban datasets, significantly increasing the scientific value of the project.
Insights from this research can help cities improve sustainable water management and make biodiversity goals measurable and actionable. Applications may include climate adaptation strategies, improved water quality systems, and nature-inclusive urban infrastructure. The research also creates opportunities for tech companies involved in sensors, data visualization, and ecological monitoring solutions.
