The dean is charged with the overall management of the faculty. The appointment came about in consultation with the Faculty Works Council and Faculty Student Council.

Geert ten Dam, president of the UvA-AUAS Executive Board and chair of the Appointments Committee: ‘I am extremely pleased that Peter van Tienderen is prepared to take up the position of dean. Peter has been closely involved in the strategic direction of the faculty, first as an institute director and subsequently as vice dean and acting dean. He is a collegial manager with a clear vision on teaching and research, as well as on interdisciplinarity and collaboration inside and outside the university.’

Peter van Tienderen: ‘The Faculty of Science is an inspirational institution comprising dedicated students and staff. We conduct exceptional research – sometimes fundamental, sometimes with an eye to practical applications. Our education, which is both disciplinary and interdisciplinary, is attracting an ever-increasing number of students. By leveraging our talents and strengths, we will actively seek collaborative partnerships both locally and internationally in order to generate new knowledge with the support of state-of-the-art facilities, to train critical and competent students to the highest possible degree, and to ensure our knowledge is of added value to society. As dean, I am proud to be able to contribute to this mission in the coming years.’
