Matching Scientists and Entrepreneurs

High among Amsterdam’s credentials as a knowledge capital (the city recently scooped the European Capital of Innovation Award) is its mission to bring scientific institutes and businesses together. It’s an ambition that’s exemplified by the Amsterdam Science and Innovation Awards (AmSIA) for the most innovative ideas with a social or commercial application to emerge from scientific research in the city. As a committed partner of the AmSIA, Amsterdam Science Park was proud to sponsor and actively participate in a new satellite event: the Science & Business session.

This fresh initiative, designed to match research scientists with entrepreneurs, took place prior to the finals of the 11th AmSIA on May 26th. The Science & Business event offered scientists, entrepreneurs and investors the chance to meet each other in a speed-dating format that matched 22 scientists with 45 companies and other organisations – not bad for one afternoon!

The keynote speaker at the AmSIA awards, Dr. Debashish Bhattacharjee, Group Director R&D Tata Steel, underlined the importance of such collaborations between industry and science. “Our commitment to research and development is reflected in our nearly 500 R&D employees who are dedicated to their work,” he said in his speech. “In addition, we closely cooperate with universities and research institutes worldwide. Our presence at Amsterdam Science Park and our collaboration with science based start-up company Scyfer is one of those examples. Working together with the science community is vital for our global R&D strategy and future innovations."
